Experience Japanese Culture!
“The Flower Festival-Hanamatsuri”
April 12~13, 2008
America is in the midst of a health boom and Japanese food is garnering a lot of attention as a “healthy food.” Most notable among those in the spotlight is “sushi.” Sushi used to be a food for celebrities, and ordinary people did not have much experience with it. In particular, it was thought that “eating raw fish is something barbarians do.” Even in urban areas during the 1970’s eating raw fish was seen as something strange.
Thirty years later, sushi is a part of the language. Starting with the American-born California Roll, numerous rolls of many types have appeared in the U.S. The naming and “topping” of many of these rolls are colorful, reflect the local feeling, and are available not only at sushi counters, but also in the deli section of supermarkets and convenience stores. In this article I will try to retrace the footprints of the past to discover, “What is sushi?”
Strongly encouraging all interested in Japanese culture to attend!
On April 12 and 13 from 1:00 to 8:00PM, the Orange County Buddhist Church in Anaheim will host the Flower Festival. Karate Taiko and tea ceremony will be held to showcase the Japanese culture to be experienced by all, followed by exhibitions and performances.
This annual festival is attended by many. Besides the exhibitions and performances, the Japanese dishes offered are one of the highlights of the festival. Sushi and Teriyaki is offered, along with many cultural dishes not familiar to the public. This Flower Festival is actually held to celebrate the birthday of Sakyamuni Buddha, since Japanese culture has a strong relationship with Buddhism. Anyone interested in Buddhism should feel free to attend and enjoy this festival.
There are no registration fees to attend. This festival offers various cultural experiences that you can’t normally come by. Perhaps, the festival might offer an illusion of a quick trip to Japan. Bring along your family and friends. We’ll be waiting for your arrival!
