Celebrating 105 Years of Life
In May, Keiro resident Naoye Kishimoto celebrated her 105th birthday at Keiro Nursing Home (KNH). For her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Keiro was the natural place for a family birthday celebration. “My mother always invited everyone over to her house for holidays and special occasions,” explains Helen Miyamoto, daughter of Mrs. Kishimoto.
Born in Osaka-fu, Japan, Mrs. Kishimoto came to the United States in 1921. After marrying Eisho Jimmy Kishimoto, she had two children, Clark and Helen. During World War II, the family spent time in Santa Anita, California and Heart Mountain, Wyoming before moving to a farm in Colorado. After the war ended, they returned to California.
Mrs. Kishimoto was known as an excellent cook. Together with her husband, she hosted parties with delicious sushi, traditional New Year’s ozone, and her legendary made-from-scratch biscuits.
Mrs. Kishimoto remained independent and cooked for herself until shortly before her 100th birthday, when she fell and entered Keiro. Since then, Mrs. Kishimoto has enjoyed walking and doing activities. “Keiro is a wonderful place, especially since my mother is Issei and doesn’t speak much English,” says Mrs. Miyamoto.
“It’s important to help the Isseis and Niseis,” says Mrs. Kishimoto’s son Clark, who visits his mother every day. “Keiro takes good care of my mother and I feel safe having her there.”
