Keiro Living: Entertaining Our Residents
Throughout Keiro’s continuum of care, activities contribute to maintaining and enhancing the quality of life for 2,500 residents every year. More than just enjoyable, the 30,000 hours of activities serve a greater purpose to stimulate seniors’ minds, bodies, and senses, and to promote well-being in all areas of life. “At Keiro there are many opportunities for residents to enjoy activities and entertainment, whether it is indoors or out, that satisfy the diverse interests of seniors,” said Kiyoko Nishi, activities manager for South Bay Keiro Nursing Home.
Although it was challenging to get to their seats, the residents were happy to be comfortably seated as the conductor began to lead the orchestra in a classic Tchaikovsky symphony. Throughout the piece, some residents closed their eyes as if to feel the music while others smiled from ear to ear. During a piece by Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky, fireworks erupted into the sky as if a fire had started in the heavens. The residents could not keep their eyes off of the sparks spraying into the night with the orchestra playing in unison with the fireworks. “It’s my first time at the Hollywood Bowl,” said resident Yoko O’Malley. “I’m very lucky and happy to be here and am appreciative of Keiro for this opportunity.”
Residents from Keiro Intermediate Care Facility took a trip to Dodger Stadium to watch the Los Angeles Dodgers play the Philadelphia Phillies. Sporting Dodgers’ caps throughout the game, the residents gleamed with pride as the Dodgers won their game at home. “We won by only one point but we won,” said resident Masako Morimoto excitedly. “My son takes me once in a while and it is always fun!” The game ended on a good pitch as Takashi Saito struck out the last player of the game. “The game was very good,” claims resident Alyce Ito, who also loves the Dodgers. This outing was definitely a home run with the residents!
