South Bay Keiro Nursing Home Annual Bazaar
Draws Residents and Community Members Together
On Saturday, October 20, South Bay Keiro Nursing Home (SBKNH) held its annual bazaar, gathering residents, family members, friends, and the neighboring community for a fun-filled day. All net proceeds from the bazaar will help maintain the quality of life for residents at SBKNH, one of four facilities of Keiro Senior HealthCare.
The bazaar included handmade crafts, some of which were made by South Bay Keiro residents, plants, produce, “white elephant” gifts, and both Japanese and American food for sale. Matsutoyo-kai, Hikari Taiko, and Keiro’s Howard Hiyoshida, administrator of SBKNH, entertained attendees at the bazaar. Following the entertainment, Ray Shibata, president of the Family and Friends of Keiro Nursing Homes (FFKNH) announced the winners of the annual FFKNH benefit drawing. Winners received prizes ranging from cash to gift cards from local businesses.
“Although we have outings twice a month for the residents, we cannot take everyone at once,” said Kiyoko Nishi, activities manager of SBKNH and lead event organizer. “The bazaar brings a carnival-like atmosphere to all 98 of our residents so they can have a good time together without having to leave the nursing home.”
Preparations for the bazaar began in July and involved much planning and support from the community, especially members of FFKNH, SBKNH staff bazaar committee members, and many volunteers. Local businesses, golf associations, boy scouts, major corporations, volunteer fundraisers, and community members of different generations and various walks of life came together for the same cause: to have a good time while supporting the seniors.
“Preparation for the bazaar takes much effort and we are thankful to all the volunteers and donors who made this event possible,” said Kiyoko Nishi. “When we see the residents smile and their faces brighten, we are inspired to continue and have another bazaar next year.”
