Celebrating the New Year at Keiro

On Friday, January 11, Keiro Retirement Home (KRH) hosted its annual New Year’s Party for residents, volunteers, special guests, and Keiro staff members. Approximately 300 attendees enjoyed a traditional New Year’s feast, including sashimi and kazunoko donated by Los Angeles Fish Company and Friends of Keiro Retirement Home, kouhaku manju and omochi donated by Friends of Keiro Retirement Home, sake donated by KRH resident Yoshiko Okino, and osechi ryori made possible by a gift from Janice M. Pulici. “The New Year’s Party is an opportunity for Keiro residents and our community to join as one family, looking ahead to a bright new year,” said Takeshi Oishi, administrator at KRH.
After New Year’s greetings from Keiro Senior HealthCare President and CEO Shawn Miyake, KRH Administrator Tak Oishi, and KRH Board Chairman Stuart Tsujimoto, several organizations expressed their support for Keiro with check presentations representing their separate fund raising efforts to benefit Keiro. Recognizing the need to care for seniors and enhance their quality of life, representatives from the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Southern California (JCCSC), led by President Tatsuhiko Wakao, presented a check for $8,168.65, proceeds from the organization’s 2007 Year-End Charity Drive. Representatives from Senior Foundation CC, led by Mucci Taylor, presented a $10,000 check to benefit Keiro’s Living Treasures Endowment Fund. Toshio Handa of Pasadena Seminar Kai presented a check for $1329 to Keiro. It is only with the generous support of our community that Keiro is able to provide special luncheons like the New Year’s party, culturally-sensitive activities, and Japanese food for its residents. During the luncheon, the residents and guests enjoyed classical Japanese dance performances by Wakayagi Hisami Shachuu. At the end of the program, residents, guests, and performers alike joined in singing the New Year’s song, “Ichigatsu Tsuitachi.”
“The party is a perfect example of how Keiro touches the lives of our residents and so many others in our community,” said Oishi. “By bringing together residents, friends, volunteers, donors, and staff, we can support Keiro’s tradition of caring together.”If you would like information on supporting South Bay Keiro Nursing Home, please call (323) 980-7513 or e-mail donations@keiro.org.
