Bridge USA Summer Festival
The Bridge USA Twelfth Annual Summer Festival will be held at the Torrance Cultural Center on Sunday July 8 from 10:00 to 7:00 p.m. Bridge USA is a Japanese language “info-tainment” magazine that sponsors a number of Japanese cultural events ranging from soccer to sake tasting. The Summer Festival will feature food, demonstrations, vendors and entertainment such as dance and musical performances. The Torrance Cultural Center is at 3350 Civic Center Drive. Tokyo ADC Exhibition
A blend of pop, tradition and innovation, an exhibition that provides a glimpse into the world of Tokyo Advertising Director’s Club is now open at the George J. Doizaki Theater in Little Tokyo. Tokyo ADC features some of the most trend-setting minds in commercial visual arts in the world today through examples of logos, print and television advertising, and book and product design. The commercial artists, whose work is on display here, show how they explore and discover new ways of delivering their products to the consumer market. Admission Free. Zenshuji Obon Carnival
Zenshuji Soto Zen Mission’s 49th Obon Carnival will be held on Saturday, July 7 and Sunday, July 8 starting at 11:00 a.m. on both days. Each year the Carnival gets bigger, and this year’s is expected to be bigger than ever. On the main stage will be Japanese dance performances, a talent show, and a Taiko concert featuring Shinzen Daiko. When you get hungry, opt for BBQ, sushi, teriyaki chicken, or udon. Take in the tea ceremony and flower arrangement demonstrations that will be ongoing both days. To round out the celebration, enjoy the noodle eating contest, kids fun time, and other musical performances. The festival finishes at 8:00 pm both days. Landscaping Exhibit at JANM
The exhibit, “Landscaping America: Beyond the Japanese Garden,” will be on display through October 21 at the Japanese American National Museum in Little Tokyo. Landscaping America reveals the personal stories, historical journeys, creativity, and community processes that underlie the surface of the “Japanese garden.” This multimedia exhibition highlights how West Coast Japanese Americans drew upon their agricultural and ethnic backgrounds to carve out a viable vocational niche in gardening, and in the process, reinterpreted Japanese garden traditions, offered alternative approaches to working with nature, and contributed to the diversity of the American landscape. Little Tokyo Walking Tour
Little Tokyo was once a thriving residential, business, and cultural center of one of the largest Japanese American community in the U.S. until World War II. On Saturday, July 28, relive history and learn about present-day Little Tokyo with National Museum docents on this historic walking tour. Reservations, along with comfortable clothes and walking shoes are recommended. The fee is $8 for National Museum members and $13 for non-members, which includes Museum admission. The Religious Arts of Japan
The exhibit, “The Religious Arts of Japan,” will be on display at Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena through October 31. It will features an introduction to two major religions, Shinto and Buddhism, that have existed harmoniously in Japan for centuries, playing complementary roles in its culture and giving rise to a rich variety of art forms. The exhibit includes some of the finest art works in the Pacific Asia Museum collection, many of which are being exhibited for the first time. Pacific Asia Museum is at 46 North Los Robles Avenue and is open Wednesday-Sunday 10am-6pm. Museum admission: $7 Adults, $5 Seniors & Students.
