Japanese Traditional Folk Song Concert

Tameshichiro Miura Jr., Japan’s Number One Minyo Performer

As a commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the amity of Japan-U.S., Sushi & Tofu is sponsoring the performance of Tameshichiro Miura Jr., the Minyo Concert on the 13th of December at Zenshuji Temple in Little Tokyo.  Minyo (plural) are traditional Japanese folk songs, which are normally played with four of the primary traditional instruments: shamisen (lute-like three-stringed instrument), shakuhachi  (five-holed bamboo flute), taiko (drums of various sizes) and the koto (zither-like 13-stringed instrument).  We are having three of reputable performers at the event: Mr. Tameshichiro Miura Jr., Mr. Michiyasu Mihashi, and Mr. Shuichi Maruyama.  Mr. Miura Jr. will sing not only minyo but also several beloved popular songs sung by Michiya Mihashi.  For more information about the event and performers, please visit Sushi & Tofu website at www.sushiandtofu.com

Tameshichiro Miura Jr.

Born in Tokyo in 1941.He studied several types of songs including Minyo, traditional Japanese folk song with professional singers in his childhood. He got married to a daughter of Tameshichiro Miura in 1967. At that time the name of Tameshichiro Miura was given to the great singer and Tsugaru Jamisen player, Michiya Mihashi. Because Michiya Mihashi was a disciple and relatives of Tameshichiro Miura. So Tameshichiro Miura Jr. studied Minyo, especially Esashi oiwake for several years with Michiya Mihashi and got back his name later. Tameshichiro Miura Jr. is teaching Minyo and Minyo Shakuhachi in Tokyo for 33 years and he participates in several concerts as a guest every year. He is also a composer of Minyo songs. His father in law, Tameshichiro Miura was born in 1883. And he was called the “God of Minyo” for his vocal renditions of the complex Minyo “Esashi Oiwake” in Hokkaido. In this concert Tameshichiro Miura Jr. will sing not only Minyo but also several beloved popular songs sung by Michiya Mihashi.
