..How to Start a Restaurant in LA County

Having worked as the Business Counselor in the Japanese and Japanese American communities, for almost 7 years, I’ve assisted many merchants and entrepreneurs over the years.  I must say, of all the various industries of businesses here in Little Tokyo, the majority that I have helped have been restaurants.

Although I cannot speak on topics such as recipes and the brands and models of kitchen equipment, I do have experience working with architects, contractors, health department and building and safety department staff and inspectors.  I also know the various types of licenses and permits that one needs to obtain in order to open the doors of a restaurant to the general public.

For those who are interested in learning the basics of starting a restaurant in the County of Los Angeles (whether it is a Japanese, Mexican, Italian restaurant, or a café or bakery), you are invited to attend this workshop.

The workshop will be sponsored by the Asian Pacific Islander Small Business Program and the Small Business Administration.  It will be held on Tuesday evening, February 27, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Little Tokyo Service Center.  The address is 231 East Third Street, Los Angeles, CA  90013. The lecture will be given in English and admission is free.  However, seating is limited, so please RSVP to Nancy Kikuchi at 213-473-1658 or nkikuchi@LTSC.org.

"Basic First Aid and CPR Class"

We have also found that knowledge of basic first aid and CPR is helpful not only to restaurant owners and employees, but to the general public, as well.  We will hold a workshop covering topics such as cuts, burns, choking and basic CPR. The course material is approved by the American Red Cross and will be taught by a certified instructor (in English).

This workshop will be held on Tuesday, March 27, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Little Tokyo Visitor Center.  The address is 307 Eat First Street, Los Angeles, CA  90012.  To RSVP, please call 213-613-1911.  Admission is free.

LOOKING FORWARD TO 2007

I’m still preparing my list of goals for next year.  I’m making sure I’m writing them down – just like I tell my clients – to put their business plans in writing.  I’ll have the list somewhere where it’ll be visible to me daily (like on the refrigerator or the bathroom mirror).  I won’t make them too hard to attain (because I want some level of success), but I‘ll have some goals that will challenge me, too.  I want to learn something completely new, and I want to have some fun goals too, like watching a movie every month.  I don’t want my list to be too boring and serious.  Hopefully, with this mix of various types of goals, I should have a fun, yet stimulating year.  Good luck with your list!

Finally,

To all the readers of Sushi and Sake Magazine –

Happy Holidays to you and yours.

Here’s to a prosperous and enterprising 2007.

If you need business assistance, please call the Service Center.
